TRRAIN Retail Inclusion Summit-Only 36% of India's persons with disability are employed 90% in the unorganised sector

Trust for Retailers & Retail Associates of India (TRRAIN), in association with HSBC, today announced the release of their report on disability employment titled ‘Disability Employment: Indian Retail Changing Equations’. This report makes a strong case for the retail industry to be the flag bearer of employment for PwDs. It was released during the 3rd edition of its Retail Inclusion Summit aimed at driving an impetus towards making India's corporates more diverse and inclusive.

The summit was attended by BS Nagesh, Founder, TRRAIN, Surendra Rosha, CEO, HSBC, Neville Noronha, CEO, D Mart, Sadashiv Nayak, Business Head, Big Bazaar, and Piyush Dutt, CHRO, Vishal Mega Mart amongst others.

According to the India census 2011, the number of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in India is 26.8 million or 2.21% of the total population. The report brings to light some startling statistics pertaining to the PwD population in India.
•        It states that the actual number of PwD in India is between 5-10% of the total population, as against the 2.21% put forth in the 2011 census
•        Interestingly, around 50% of PwD population in India is in the employable age group (20-59 years). However, lack of education is a hindrance to employability as around 46% of the PwD population in India is uneducated
•        While 36% of India’s PwD are employed, they are mostly (around 90%) employed in the unorganized sector
•        Furthermore, the report finds that mainstreaming PwD can add around 5-7% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
•        It is encouraging that hiring of PwD in the retail sector has gone up by 53% between 2011-18. However, there is enhanced scope for the retail industry in India to employ and mainstream PwD as the report establishes a positive correlation between customers and stores manned by PWD

Given that around 80% of jobs in the retail sector are customer facing, employing PwD serves the dual purpose of:
•        Providing employment to them
•        Sensitising the larger society about the challenges faced by PwD

Importantly, it underscores how PwD can contribute to economic growth as well as societal development if provided the right opportunities. With this in mind, the ‘Disability Employment: Indian Retail Changing Equations’ report provides a consolidated list of strategies and recommendations for the government and retail companies to train and employ persons with disabilities.

“We know that ‘inclusive development’ and accessibility is a genuine challenge. 64% of the persons with disability are unemployed, as compared to an average 9% unemployment rate for the rest of the population,” said BS Nagesh, Founder TRRAIN, offering perspective on the challenge at hand. TRRAIN runs an initiative titled PANKH, which aims to train people with disabilities and provide them with employment opportunities in the retail industry.

Commenting on the report, Surendra Rosha, CEO, HSBC, said, “Since 2016, we have supported 13 organisations working with PwDs that have trained over 1,800 youth and placed 1,130 of them. However, we will not stop here. Our partners have highlighted the need for an ecosystem building approach and have conveyed the urgency of investing in data, insights and frameworks that will enable a greater number of employers to hire PwD’s. The partnership with TRRAIN, a leading organisation in skilling PwD’s in the retail sector, is, therefore, an important one. With this report, it is our endeavour to bring skills development and placements for PwDs to the forefront of the employability agenda.”

The day-long programme had an opening plenary featuring BS Nagesh as moderator for a session with Surendra Rosha and Sadashiv Nayak on why service sector must bring inclusion in the workplace.

“1 in 15 persons have a disability. So when we create employment we are actually touching 15 households and telling them be carefree. We are creating consumption from 7% of the population and making the brand feel good which is a win-win situation. PwDs have done well in the customer facing as well as the back end jobs,” said Sadashiv Nayak, Business Head, Big Bazaar.

Topics such as cultivating inclusion into a company’s culture, women in retail workforce and technology as an enabler for inclusion were discussed through the day.

“The Retail Inclusion Summit organised by TRRAIN has done a fantastic job so far in building a high level of awareness around inclusion and having the corporate sector engaged and involved. It’s time to take the game to the next level, where instead of just reaching out to include people we enable them with special abilities. Organisations must focus on PwD’s ability, attitude and output,” said Jamshed Daboo, MD, Trent Hypermarket Pvt. Ltd.

The launch of India’s first quiet hour- an initiative started globally for shoppers on the autism spectrum who struggle due to music and noise, was overseen by Vineet Saraiwala, Inclusion Lead at Big Bazaar and Sonali Saini, SOL’s Arc.

Other attendees included names such as Ameesha Prabhu, CEO, TRRAIN, Nancy Desai , Director Finance & Livelihood Programs, TRRAIN, Clement Chauvet, Chief, Skill and Business Development , UNDP  India, Maneesha Chadha,Head – CSR & Philanthropic Initiatives, JP Morgan India, Bani Khurana, HRBP Reliance Digital & Head D&I Initiatives, Sriram Shankar, Head India Enterprises Business, Goodera, Richa Bansal, Founder & CEO, Saarathee CRM Pvt Ltd., Dipesh Sutariya, Co-Founder, Enable India, Shishir Gorle, Founder, Square Meal Foods ,  B Venkatramana, Group President, Landmark Group, Ranjan Chakraborty, COO, Director Operation, Square Meal Foods,  Chitra Padmanabhan, Head HR Reliance Digital and James Raphael, Executive Head, RASCI.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor discusses importance of clean cooking with industry leaders, showcases innovative technologies

Hosted by the Clean Cooking Alliance, the event also marked the start of a new behavior change communications campaign in India

Influential leaders and heads of organizations from across India came together in Mumbai to discuss the importance of clean cooking solutions and to recognize some of the most innovative cooking technologies on the market today.
Hosted by the Clean Cooking Alliance (the “Alliance”), the event at the Taj Lands End Hotel kicked off with a conversation between Dymphna van der Lans, Alliance CEO; Sanjeev Kapoor, Chef Extraordinaire and member of the Alliance Chef Corps; Narayana Murthy, Founder of Infosys; and Prasoon Joshi, CEO and CCO of McCann Worldgroup India. The speakers shared some of their personal motivations for working with the Alliance to promote the use of cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels.
“Since cooking has given me so much, what I can give back is not just quality food, but also my expertise and reach,” said ChefKapoor. “I used to think that cooking was just about food, something that could bring joy. But the trouble with it – the fact that it can kill – was an eye-opener. I didn’t want to sleep quietly with the fact that something that brings me so much joy can also kill.”
In India, over 789 million people – nearly 60 percent of the population – depend on polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves to cook their food. Nearly half a million deaths each year are linked to exposure to toxic smoke from cooking and heating.
“Research shows that using traditional stoves reduces the birth weight of a child,” noted Mr. Murthy. “If we want our children to be strong, to be healthy, to get a good education, we need to take good care of mothers. And one dimension of that is making sure they have a modern contraption for cooking.”
“I’m very passionate about energy services and how they make people’s lives better,” said Mrs. Van der Lans. “My vision is about the effective use of power. No one’s life should be limited by how they cook. It’s really important to think about the next phase of technology and innovation, and I see that opportunity here in India.”
“Where we can contribute is by telling stories,” said Mr. Joshi, whose company is working with the Alliance and other partners to implement a new behavior change campaign in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. “If we can inspire by telling stories of people whose lives have been transformed by clean cooking, then not only policymakers and financial institutions but people themselves will realize what a big difference clean cooking can make.”
Mr. Joshi also unveiled the new Hindi slogan for the campaign, for which the approximate English translation is, “As the smoke is disappearing, progress is appearing.” This aims to motivate people across India through the clean cooking campaign, which is a joint effort by the Alliance, Shell, Tata Trusts, McCann WorldGroup, Sambodhi, Nexleaf Analytics, DharmaLife, and SEWA.
The discussion was followed by a cooking demonstration by Chef Kapoor, who prepared a variety of dishes using several of the clean cooking technologies exhibited. The demonstration included products by Greenway Appliances, Envirofit, Wonder Chef, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and the Indian Institute of TechnologyBombay, representing technologies powered by solar energy, electric induction, liquified petroleum gas, charcoal, and wood.

ICICI Lombard, the leading private sector non-life insurance company in India, today set a new Guinness World Record as part of its efforts to create awareness on road safety measures. The company has been promoting the cause of Road Safety through its unique CSR initiative ‘Ride To Safety’ since 2015. The record involved school children from 7 schools in Mumbai assembling at an open ground in Mumbai to form the shape of a helmet. The children wore specially designed ISI marked helmets that the company distributes during its ‘Ride To Safety’ workshops. The earlier record for the largest gathering for people wearing helmets at one location was 3,921 held by Ministry of Interiors in Dubai.

The Guinness attempt was adjudicated by an official Guinness representative, Lucia Sinigagliesi who had specially flown down to Mumbai from London for the same. Senior dignitaries from the Mumbai traffic police were also present to witness the record. Further, to support the noble cause, renowned actor Shahid Kapoor, who is also a young parent, engaged with the children and motivated them to successfully complete the challenge.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, MD & CEO, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. said “Our ‘Ride to Safety’ initiative is a unique endeavor to facilitate a behavioral change among children and parents to adopt road safety habits when riding a two-wheeler. Since its inception in 2015, we have directly contacted over 1,00,000 parents and their children to promote the cause of Road Safety and distributed more than 70,000 ISI marked helmets. We are humbled by the Guinness World Record milestone and believe that this recognition will help us further the cause of road safety among Indian children.”

Actor Shahid Kapoor said “I am honored to be associated with this initiative that rightly addresses the gap of ensuring road safety among 2-wheeler riding children. I appreciate the efforts of ICICI Lombard in taking up this cause and pursuing it with earnest.”

- ICICI Lombard’s ‘Managing New Age Risks’ survey

ICICI Lombard, the leading private sector non-life insurance company in India, has commissioned a PAN India survey titled ‘Managing New Age Risks’ to assess the preparedness of Indian organizations towards new age risks. Feedback from CXOs from 100 companies across various sectors was taken for this research.

India Inc. is witnessing unprecedented times as technology becomes a part of life for all companies – irrespective of the sector one operates in. With new technology such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Cloud Computing, Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) come the associated risks such as cyber-attacks, data theft, cloud hacks etc. India was the target of 17% cyberattacks, second only to US (38%) between 2015 – 2017 as per a report by Symantec Corp, USA.

ICICI Lombard delved into understanding the risks that India Inc. perceives as critical for business, the importance of new age risks in their operations and the preparedness & ability of companies to handle new age risks. It also looked at the role of insurers in managing risks from the lens of Indian firms.

The research findings were unveiled by Bhargav Dasgupta, MD & CEO, ICICI Lombard, Alok
Agarwal, Executive Director, ICICI Lombard and Gopal Balachandran, CFO & CRO, ICICI
Lombard in the presence of Prof. Kenneth Rogoff, Professor of Economics & Public Policy at
Harvard University and a former Chief Economist at International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The report highlights that companies still consider traditional risks as extremely crucial for their
businesses. 58% of the respondents thought that property and assets was the most pivotal risk
followed by employee health and accident (53%). Machinery and equipment closely followed at 52%. When asked on which risks have been gaining importance in the last 3 years, the response was clearly for new age risks such as cyber-crimes, data theft etc. 67% of India Inc. today feels that risks from cyber-crimes have increased substantially in the last 3 years and 63% believe risks from data thefts have gone up substantially in the same period.

In terms of the challenges to handle risks, 43% company executives mentioned each new age risk incident to be unique, while 42% found it difficult to even identify the source of the new age risk incident, making managing it a tough task. 21% firms believed that new age risk incidents spread too fast, making it difficult for firms to handle them.

www.icicilombard.com

Lack of internal capabilities was a key takeaway when it came to preparedness of organizations in managing new age risks. 41% respondents believed that their existing systems were not equipped to handle these risks, while 39% companies felt there was a shortage of skilled manpower that could address these risks.

When asked about the best way to handle new age risks, 71% companies had a unanimous response that new age risks would rather be prevented, instead of being handled when they occur. On the role of insurers, 81% companies believe that insurers are equipped to a certain extent in managing new age risks. Specifically, companies believe that insurers are more equipped to manage risks such as cloud computing (100%) and cyber-attacks (69%). However, when it comes to data theft related risks, 63% firms believe that the same can be managed internally.

According to Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, MD & CEO, ICICI Lombard, “New age risks are already
a reality today, globally and in India. It is most critical that Indian firms take cognizance of this aspect. As is evident from our ‘Managing New Age Risks’ survey, being prepared and having the right risk management framework in place is the need of the hour. At ICICI Lombard, we are
partnering with our clients to ensure that they are equipped with appropriate and adequate ‘risk
management and mitigation’ solutions to effectively handle any prospective ‘new age risk’ incidents.”

Textile Tycoon and Author Dhruv Somani’s latest four-volume Bollywood book series, titled ‘A Touch of Evil’ was launched by film legend and noted politician Mr. Shatrughan Sinha and wife Mrs. Poonam Sinha along with Aarti Surendranath, Maneck Davar and Mr. Sanjeev Taparia on February 6, 2019, at St. Regis in Mumbai. The book which is an ultimate guide to Hindi cinema’s horror films was together unveiled by them.

Dhruv Somani’s book series is a culmination of over 300 suspense, thriller and horror films. It encapsulates the essence of a genre that has been largely untapped in terms of serious documentation. “Many of the films I have chosen to highlight have been path-breaking and are recognised as milestones in the history of Indian cinema. However, I have also included several films that one may have branded as ‘duds’ when they were released, yet they have a strong star cast and melodious music. They have also contributed in a significant way to shaping this genre, but they are underrated and will soon be forgotten if not for documentation that invites a resurgence and gives these films new and fair regard,” the author explained.

‘A Touch of Evil’ is a treat for cine-lovers and information seekers. Adding to the appeal of this four-volume anthology are 500 images of posters, lobby cards and original booklets, besides fascinating trivia on maverick filmmakers and legendary stars.

Shining a spotlight on the best of this genre, these books traverse seven decades of cinema, to identify and celebrate movie milestones. “This book series attempts to provide an understanding of this genre by highlighting its landmark films. Hopefully it will act as a source of information for the next generation, while also serving as an object of memorabilia for others who love cinema with the same zeal and passion that Dhruv does,” said cinematic legend Shatrughan Sinha.

Dhruv Somani’s effort to document a much-loved — but largely lost — era of moviemaking is available in bookstores nationwide this month onwards. The 4-volume set is priced at Rs. 5999.

The Book is also Available on: Amazon, Flipkart, eBay
