Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri. Vidyasagar Rao with Solomon Sopher, president of the Baghdadi Jewish community in Mumbai, and Mrs. Sangita Jindal of the JSW Group dedicating the restored Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue to the Jewish Community and the cultural heritage of Mumbai, on 7th February 2019

Solomon Sopher, president of the Baghdadi Jewish community in Mumbai, and Sangita and Sajjan Jindal of the JSW Group dedicated the restored Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue to the Jewish Community and the cultural heritage of Mumbai today, in the august presence of Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri. Vidyasagar Rao. This monument is one of the most significant Jewish synagogues in India and is a place of worship for Mumbai’s Baghdadi and Bene Israeli Jewish Community.

Located in the heart of Mumbai’s art district, the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue is a Grade IIA Classical Revival Structure protected under the Heritage Regulations for Greater Bombay 1995. Originally designed by Bombay architects Gostling and Morris, the Synagogue has now been restored to its original grandeur through the collaborative efforts of JSW Group, Sir Jacob Sassoon & Allied Trust, Kala Ghoda Association and World Monument Fund. Ms. Abha Narain Lambah has served as the Principal Conservation Architect of the Bombay Synagogue project while Ms Swati Chandgadkar has restored the stained-glass panels.

Key Highlights of Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue Restoration
Some of the key highlights of restoration undertaken at the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue include:
  • To restore the structural strength of the monument, roof repairs, terrace waterproofing, splice repair of damaged sections of timber rafters, repair of cracks as well as repair of structural wooden members have been undertaken.
  • The damaged terracotta tiled roofing has been replaced with new tiles to match the original profile of timber boarding, wherever found missing in the roof areas.
  • Lead flashing, originally used in most buildings for gutters, window frames and areas prone to water leakages, has been re-introduced in a similar fashion.
  • Several of the Synagogue’s original religious symbols – grape vines, citron fruit, and the Star of David among others – that had been obscured under years of blue paint have also been beautifully restored back on the walls.
  • The original colour tone of the monument has also been restored along with the stencil of the motifs.
  • The intricate stained-glass windows were removed, cleaned and painstakingly restored.

A special feature of the Synagogue is the use of rusticated plaster to decorate masonry courses on the ground floor. The prayer hall space has high ceiling contains large windows and clerestories with operable louvered shutters. The hall is arranged along an east to west orientation, with the entry doors placed east orientation and the Bechal, or Ark, containing the Torah scrolls, facing west towards Jerusalem. The sanctuary features a centralized or freestanding podium, a Sephardic, eastern Jewish tradition, from where the service is conducted. Surrounding the Synagogue’s podium are several wooden benches set on the floor which is finished in Minton tiles originally imported from Stoke-on-Trent in England. Separate seating areas for men and women are provided with sizeable upstairs galleries around the sanctuary’s double-height perimeter along the sides and rear.

Synagogues have never conformed to stylistic rules anywhere in the world or, as a building type, never been resolved in unique or recognizable terms and the Synagogues in India are no exception. They vary considerably in size, extent and quality of detail. In the case of Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, it was built in the Classical Revival style with decorative Victorian interiors.

I want to be an Author - season 2 in association with Kotak was announced by The Write Place, the publishing arm of Crossword Bookstores, at Ryan International School, Mumbai.

On Saturday, 350 students from top-notch schools like Green Lawn’s High school, Ryan International school, J B Petit, Rustomjee Cambridge to Utpal Sanghvi Global, and Billabong High International gathered for the first of its kind initiative, that motivates students to submit their short stories.
Entries for season 2 were opened in November 2018. Since then Crossword has received more than double the entries. This year 30,000 stories were submitted as opposed to the 10,000-last year, indicating that the initiative is reaching multitudes of students across the city.

Maulik Desai, Head, Crossword Bookstores said, “ We are excited for the second season of "I Want to be An Author". Crossword has been dedicated to providing its customers quality writing in English since the past 26 years. This is a platform we have started for students to give them the opportunity to be more creative and confident. It’s also a rare chance for the students to showcase their writing skills and get published.”

While interacting with the young students, children’s author Shamim Padamsee shared, “Imagination and creativity will be of utmost importance in the years ahead. How does it help? Well, think of the stalwarts of people in days of yore who asked the question, What if? The Wright Brothers asked, what if there was a machine that would enable man to fly? What if machines can talk? What if, man can go to the moon? These questions triggered thought processes in place that propelled us into a never dreamt of future. Writers do the same. They ask, What if? And thus, unleash their creativity to come up with propositions and possibilities to address the same.”

The final anthology will comprise of approximately 45 excellent short stories giving students the chance to become published writers and is slated to be released in April end.

One of the students, 13-year-old Disha Jain from The Universal School, Tardeo said, “Writing is fun as you can put all your thoughts into it and later on, they give you so many memories!”

Another16 yrs old,  student   Fazia Khan from Kamla High School  said, My aim is to be an author because I used to like writing. And writing is my passion and I feel very happy to write something new and to write something interesting. And I want to this writing for my future and for my parents. To make them proud.

In an era where binge watching tv shows and movies is more customary, an increasing number of students are spending their time to write and read.

"The first edition of the book sold over 1000 copies. Research shows that if children start writing stories from an early age then their imagination is empowered, they have better concentration and communication is highly improved. ‘I Want to be an Author’ is the perfect booster for the students to start writing," added Anup Jerajani, Head, The Write Place.

Writers who have found their calling through The Write Place include Sanya Runwal who wrote the brilliant Ten Dollar Bride and Abhishek Roy, author of Father of the Gods.

McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Affiliate, in association with Nehru Science Centre, and Dr. N.S. Vahia Foundation, Mumbai, will conduct learning sessions with a specimen and models of the human brain

McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Affiliate, in association with Nehru Science Centre, and Dr N.S. Vahia Foundation, has organised a seven-day exhibition and a series of lecture demonstrations on ‘Exploring Brain and Mental Health’, at Nehru Science Centre. The event will be organised between February 11, 2019 and February 17, 2019.

Mr. Parveen Pardeshi, Additional Chief Secretary Govt of Maharashtra and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra will inaugurate the exhibition at 11.30 am on February 11.

As part of the exhibition, a specimen, as well as models of human brain, along with an exhibition of experiences of persons suffering from mental illness will be on display.

The event is a global alliance of mental health professionals, national health associations, NGOs, and other institutions. A wide range of learning sessions would include specimen and models of human brain and its working explained by experts form McLean Hospital, hands-on activities for schoolchildren about the mysteries of the brain and sharing expertise on the subject of destigmatizing mental illness.
Several other organizations will also share their expertise on ‘Destigmatizing Mental Illness and Promoting Mental Health’.
The highlight for many, however, will be a human brain that has been shipped from McLean Hospital to be displayed for the seven-day-long exhibit. Experts will explain various parts of the brain to both children and adults alike and highlight what causes mental illness and what promotes mental health.
From February 12, 2019 to February 17, 2019, experts in the field of mental health will organize a series of lectures open to the public that will address issues that affect the mental health of children, special children, and adults.
"Despite the high number of people who need care, mental health is something we need to focus on. I laud McLean Hospital, Nehru Science Centre, and the Dr NS Vahia Foundation, for taking up such a sensitive issue, and destigmatizing it,” said Mr. Pardeshi.

“We hope that the week-long series is engaging and fruitful, and helps us in finding a way forward and helping remove the lack of awareness surrounding mental health in India," said Dr. Vihang Vahia, the son of the late Dr. N S Vahia, and Chief Managing Trustee of the Dr N S Vahia Foundation.

The human brain has been central to the primacy that humans hold in the evolutionary chain. Yet, for a long time, mental health issues in India have not attracted the same significance that other health issues have received. Fortunately, not any longer. Mental health and mental illness issues are now passionately discussed with increasing frequency in medical literature and the media.

Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, is a part of the National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous scientific institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is dedicated to imparting science education and creating scientific awareness and scientific temper through scientific exhibition and interaction between leaders in science and young students. Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai.  His well-wishers and students founded the Dr. N.S. Vahia Foundation, which aspires to propagate Dr. N.S. Vahia’s vision and mission to provide global standards of medical care to the mentally ill in India. The foundation hosts educational programs for young psychiatrists and other mental health professionals from Maharashtra on subjects related to newer developments in the field of mental health.

With burgeoning fire incidences in our country and the associated damage of properties and human loss, it is high time that the stakeholders of the industry congregate aiming at deciding preventive strategies, align to Fire Safety norms and offer their concerted opinions towards finding solutions to minimize such catastrophes. India, over the years has been witness to several fire related mishaps. Time has come to imbibe the best construction practices within the intricate relationship between life safety codes, fire risk, and combustible materials used in design of facades of high rises that make the skyline of Mumbai. Addressing this issue, Aludecor, a pioneer in the world of Metal Composite Panels, offering fire safety solutions, held a discussion session between key industry thought leaders and stakeholders to exchange ideas and share knowledge about the best construction practices. Titled #BeatTheFire, the discussion was attended by Dr. Prabhat S. Rahangdale, Director - Directorate of Maharashtra Fire Services and Chief Fire Officer, Ar. Kshitij Limaye, Executive Director – Sankalpan Architecture, Mr. Binoy Das, Group Managing Director – Façade Concept Design Group, Mr. Rahul Gupta, General Manager – Element Materials Technology, Mr. Ashok Kumar Bhaiya, Chairman & Managing Director, Aludecor and Ar. Fire Safety norms for buildings are our highest priority. Because of negligence or lack of knowledge people tend to lose their valuable lives. Buildings and market places needs to be fire proof and it is a good platform like this to communicate with the stakeholders and make the citizens aware and educate them about right building materials with fire proof properties. Such initiatives are always welcome by the State Fire department.”

Elaborating on the need of superior fire safety norms, Mr. Ashok Kumar Bhaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Aludecor, said, “In India, awareness about fire safety and security needs to grow exponentially to safeguard the high stakes in terms of human lives, assets, investments and resources. We at Aludecor have been striving to contribute in the best way possible for us towards fire safety in buildings, be it through developing the best fire-safe product or by sensitizing the industry on the importance of embracing norms that would make our country fire safe. . We believe such concerted efforts are required by the stakeholders to alleviate the concerns regarding fire safety and also explore the best materials that can be put into use across high-rises which have become a norm for a metropolitan skyline. I am thankful to the stalwarts of the industry and Dr. Prabhat S. Rahangdale who have joined us today to take the first step towards a fire safe society for future. We are happy to showcase our latest indigenously made non-combustible metal composite panel or MCP, Aludecor Firewall A2, which has fireproof properties similar to metals. On Friday, Crossword Bookstores and Puffin India Publishing launched The Adventures of Biplob the Bumblebee by author Abhishek Talwar at Crossword Bookstores, Kemps Corner. Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan also attended the event.

The book has been illustrated by Sonal Goyal. Entertaining and interacting with the kids, Preeti Vyas, Founder, FunOkPlease, along with the author Abhishek Talwar read out a few pages from the book.

Sportsperson, model, and award winning actress Sagarika Ghatge and gynaecologist Dr. Nozer Sheriar, were part of the panel discussion along with the author. Role models, the importance of reading early on, and the character of Biplob the Bumblebee were discussed by the panelists.

Talking about his reading preferences Zaheer Khan said, “I like quick reads, Abhishek Talwar’s book The Adventures of Biplob the Bumblebee is easy to read and tells us a lot about values.”

An entrepreneur and father, Talwar said, “It all started with me explaining different complicated science concepts with the same characters in story form to my kids. They became so interesting and easy to recollect, I had to write them down. I am writing several stories at the moment- one with Chef Jerry as the protagonist, another is called Rakshasas of Bharat and I write travelogues as well.”

Speaking about building role models Sagarika Ghatge said, “I think it is important to learn from stories about values of friendships. I believe that’s how role models are built. Not by exposing kids to several role models at a time but learning from the characters in a story”

The Adventures of Biplob the Bumblebee consists of three short stories. The protagonist Biplob, inculcates love for nature and how to conserve it and has a simple narrative explaining the concepts of pollination, rainwater harvesting and natural pesticides through colourful illustrations.

The vibrantly illustrated stories promise to teach kids something new through lessons on science and friendship.

Dr. Nozer Sheriar siad, “Reading and storytelling gives us a chance to visualise objects and scenarios with our own imagination. Quite different from the digitised part of the world. In fact, Crossword has been a hideout for me when I am at the hospital waiting for someone to come out into this world.”

JSW Cement, part of US$ 13 billion JSW Group and India’s leading producer of Green Cement has been recording higher than industry growth in all markets it currently operates. The cumulative volume growth recorded by JSW Cement during first nine months ending December 31, 2018 was 54%. The cement industry across participative markets grew by 20% during the same period.

The company, recently, commissioned its new enhanced capacity at Dolvi Works in Raigad Maharashtra taking the plant’s overall capacity from 1 MTPA to 2.2 MTPA. This expansion takes the current installed capacity of JSW Cement to 12.6 MTPA. The expansion along with other capacity enhancement work already underway at various location across the country will take the installed capacity of JSW Cement as a whole to 14 MTPA by April 2019. These projects are in line with the overall growth strategy and vision of the company of reaching a total installed capacity of 20 MTPA by December 2020.

The state-of-the-art Dolvi facility is strategically located at the western coast of India and is well connected through road, rail & waterways. It produces Portland Slag Cement (PSC), a superior quality green cement that gives high long-term strength, and Concreel HD, a premium cement product which is quick setting, and promises very high strength and durability. The facility also produces Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), a key material in the booming real estate industry. In Mumbai region massive infrastructure projects have started such as Mumbai Metro, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Versova Bandra Sea Link, Coast Road Project etc, wherein the engineering fraternity has always considered Portland Slag Cement & Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag to be technically superior especially when durability and life cycle costs are prime considerations. Engineering properties of Portland Slag Cement & Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag are High long-term strength, Low permeability, Reduction in thermal cracking, Better resistance to chloride ingress & sulphate attacks and an eco-friendly material. All of this puts the Dolvi Works unit of JSW Cement at a considerable advantage to cater to the green cement requirements of Maharashtra and several neighbouring markets.

JSW Cement views improving economic growth scenario, continued thrust on boosting India’s infrastructure sector and materialization of pent-up demand as primary drivers for cement consumption going forward. Development of 500 cities under the new Urban Development Mission and the initiative to build 100 smart cities is expected to deliver greater benefits to cement & construction sectors.

Rising awareness on environmental issues and the government’s push through projects like Smart Cities and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the construction industry has witnessed a shift towards the use of eco-friendly materials and technologies. Given the environmental and economic benefits, PSC is an emerging category for housing as well as other infrastructure projects. JSW Cement delivers high-quality products to many large, prestigious infrastructural projects in the southern and western regions of India. JSW Cement is considered as a Green Product and all our plants have been given a Green Pro Certification by CII / Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)
JSW Cement entered the cement business in 2009 with a vision of producing eco-friendly cement or Green cement. Manufacturing Green Cement or PSC is part of the company’s vision of building a self-reliant India. Actor Sonali Bendre Lends her Voice to the Campaign and Encourages Mothers to Share Their Stories and Seek Support from Their Community

All Out® takes a powerful stand for mothers in India with its latest campaign #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata. The campaign celebrates mothers who are tough enough to acknowledge that they don’t know everything. It features a film (watch here) about a mother’s #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata story which aims to help Indian moms be more aware and vigilant against the threat of dengue.

In the film, a mother describes how societal pressures made her believe that she knows how to protect her child. But as her son is treated in the hospital for dengue, she realises she didn’t know that her own home could become a breeding ground for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Sonali Bendre, campaign spokesperson and a mother herself, uses the platform to inspire mothers to share their #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata stories to help their peers be more vigilant and support each other. With the premise that one mother’s acceptance of not knowing it all has the power to encourage other moms to be more vigilant, the campaign highlights that it takes a tough mother to admit #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata.

Speaking on why she is lending her voice to All Out® #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata campaign, Bollywood Actor Sonali Bendre says, “As a mother, I try every day to do my best but I also know how it feels to not get everything right and learn from my mistakes. Admitting that I do not know it all as a mother does not make me any less of a parent. In fact, it helps me learn and grow when I seek knowledge from those who have had different experiences. I support #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata campaign because it encourages mothers to support each other by sharing their own experiences."

Acclaimed filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, the film’s director added, “This film celebrates the toughness of mothers who acknowledge that they don’t know it all and are willing to seek support to be able to protect their children. With this film, All Out® inspires mothers to come together and share their #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata stories to be more vigilant in the future.”

The 360-degree campaign will start with the #IDidntKnow / #MujheSabNahiPata digital film, followed by on-ground activations with bloggers and influencers and a robust online outreach.

Yamaha Music India, a subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation, Japan, a global leader in audio technology, today announced the India debut of its revolutionary AVENTAGE RX-A 80 series of AV receivers equipped with SURROUND:AI™, a proprietary, next -generation artificial intelligence technology that promises to deliver the best in class home theater experience. The RX- A80 series comprises 4 receivers – RX-A1080, RX-A2080, RX-A3080 and RX-A880 and Pre-amp CX-A5200.

Three of the receivers—the RX-A1080, RX-A2080 and RX-A3080 and Pre-amp CX-A5200—are equipped with SURROUND:AI™, a next-generation artificial intelligence technology, which makes for a clearer, more engaging listening experience by automatically adjusting surround field effects on the fly to match the scene setting. SURROUND:AI™ automatically tailors audio performance to match individual scenes in a movie or TV show. In real time and on a scene-by-scene basis, SURROUND:AI™ analyzes a scene's audio characteristics, including dialog, sound effects and channel balance. The AV receiver then compares the scene's audio characteristics to a reference database of movie scenes and automatically processes the scene's sound field to enhance the audio experience.

For example, SURROUND: AI™ makes dialog more intelligible in scenes with lots of background noise, it delivers massive, full-bodied sound for scenes with big sound effects and it ensures that viewers can hear softly spoken dialog and faint background sounds. For movie enthusiasts, all receivers play back immersive 3D object-based Dolby Atmos® and DTS:X™ soundtracks, which add height channels to traditional surround sound systems. Individual sounds move seamlessly up and down, from left to right and from front to back, adding realism to scenes in which planes fly overhead, rain pounds down on the roof, or insects buzz around and over listeners.
Born from the Yamaha legacy of tonal quality and craftsmanship, AVENTAGE receivers are built with the highest-quality components that are meticulously matched to provide the ultimate sonic experience. Refinements include a choice of electronic components that suppress digital noise and vibrations that reduce audio quality, a sturdy frame-and-beam chassis with a fifth foot to dampen sound-degrading resonances, and an aluminum front panel that shields sensitive internal circuitry from electronic noise generated by dimmer switches and other home electronics.

All Five AVENTAGE receivers also feature wireless MusicCast Surround, which gives home theater fans the opportunity to use wireless speakers for a home theater's Surround Left and Surround Right speakers, each synchronized with wired front speakers. MusicCast Surround builds on the MusicCast wireless multi-room platform, which streams music from almost any audio source over a home's Wi-Fi network to multiple MusicCast audio products throughout the house.
Most models also expand the number of HDMI connections so enthusiasts can connect more HD and 4K video sources, such as 4K game consoles and 4K Blu-ray™ players. For ultimate convenience, all models integrate with installed home-control systems such as Control4 and RTI enabling consumers to turn on their home theater system, lower the lights, and close the shades with one button press.
Commenting on the launch, Mr. Keegan Paes, Asst. Manager Marketing, Yamaha Music India Pvt Ltd, said, ‘The AVENTAGE RX- A 80 series of AV receivers is a breakthrough offering from Yamaha Music that combines our proprietary, next generation artificial intelligence technology SURROUND: AI™ to deliver the most advanced cinematic surround sound experience in homes.
